Jobs Guaranteed
Except for the fact that we all die, nothing in life is guaranteed. So the fact that Harvey Mackay is guaranteeing that if you read his book: Use Your Head to Get Your Foot in the Door, you will have a job in 6 months is a little unsettling. As a career counselor, coach and consultant for almost 15 years I get concerned that when people make those kinds of promises and offer a silver bullet solution to a problem. It seems to take advantage of people who have been desperate to find a job. No one has a silver bullet solution, not all advice applies to every one. Even the advice I offer my clients is specific to their situation, has their goals in mind and only guarantees that it will give them a better chance of landing sooner. Understanding how to successfully land a job in the shortest period of time, is understanding the game and how to play the game. I tell my clients that it is about doing the right amounts of the right things to increase their chances of landing a desirable job soonest. It is a about leveraging the laws of probability. Do the right things, well, for a sustained amount of time. We can’t control the elements of luck and timing. We can’t control the fact that employers put positions on hold in the middle of the selection process. We cannot control that after interviewing you, they decide to select an internal candidate. We can’t control that an employer’s needs to hire is based on their timing and budget not on the job seekers need and urgency to find a job. Yes there are many things a job seeker can do to increase their chances to land, buying into a one size fits all silver bullet solution isn’t one of them.
